Resume DotSpatial programming: How to use DotSpatial 1.2 with DotSpatial-12-15-2010_dll_library

May 17, 2012 at 1:22 PM

Hi all,

I try to resume my DotSpatial programming now. 15 months ago I used DotSpatial-12-15-2010_dll_library (developed by Ted D.) to do DotSpatial 6 in my Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express for few “Point” feature projects. Yesterday I saw the new version of DotSpatial (DotSpatial 1.2) in the DotSpatial.Codeplex.com and read the some documents for Download, etc.  Today I downloaded the DotSpatial 1.2 Mininal.zip and extracted all the files to my C:\TEMP\DotSpatial-v1.2-Minimal folder.   My Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express in my office is not functioning now, because my PC is not good for housing the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express properly. I wonder whether I can do DotSpatial 1.2 in my Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express. Can you tell me whether I can do DotSpatial 1.2 in my Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio (aka Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express) or not?

Please respond.

Thanks,

DotSpatial 1.x compiles against .NET 4, which requires VS 2010 or better.

Hi mudnug,  Thanks for your response.

I just have my Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express fixed by our Computer Team.  How can I compile your new DotSpatial 1.2 in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express in my office? Can DotSpatial 1.2 co-extist with DotSpatial-12-15-2010_dll_library (developed by Ted D.)? Can DotSpatial 1,2 connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio (aka Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express) or not?  Please kindly answer my new questions and respond.

Thanks,

Yes, DotSpatial versions can co-exist.

DotSpatial doesn't need a SQL database, though, so no problem there either.

Hi mudnug, Thanks for your response.

I am very rusty in getting my DotSpatial programming resumed and I have a hard time to understand/do the following things:

1) How can I compile your new DotSpatial 1.2 in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express in my office?

2) In the Tutorial of DotSpatial.Codeplex.Com, there are 2 developments: Extension and Application.  In the first tutorial "How to Create an Extension", how can I get the Online Templates: AJAX, ASP.NET, database,...., Visual Studio Extensions, WCF, Windows Forms,.... to my Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Express?

3)  I have values of XY-coordinates for 8 sampling "Point" locations in my Microsoft Excell 2007 xlsx file.  I read your second tutorial "Create an Extension to import an Excel Worksheet" in http://mudnug.wordpress.com/2012/04/10.  Sould I create a new extension to import my 8 point-data in the xlsx file?

Please kindly help me, answer the above-mentioned questions and guide me in getting my DotSpatial programming resumed by using your  DotSpatial v1.2 in my Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Express.

Thanks,
