MapWindow 6.0.12 Alpha Release 1 Documentation

This is a broad brush overview of what's new and interesting and different and useful and exciting in MapWindow 6. Here you can also read the development history of the MapWindow project and also learn about the basics of building a custom software project using the MapWindow 6 libraries.

Getting Started Using the MapWindow 6 Alpha Release 1 - This 59 page PDF file introduces the user interface to MapWindow 6 Alpha (based on Alpha release 1).

Recognizing that the design paradigm for MapWindow 6 is that most if not all of the functionality of the software should be provided through plugins, here is a list of plugins that we think are important - critical - for the MW6 release.

Status "O" means that an initial attempt at the plugin exists, but that it needs to be tested, compared to MapWindow 4 functionality, and otherwise debugged and improved. Status "X" means that the plugin is in near final form.

How MapWindow and DotSpatial are versioned

In general MapWindow 6.1.0 works with DotSpatial 1.0 and

MapWindow 6.1.1 includes DotSpatial 1.1

The projects are not synchronized on a changeset level, but I would expect the latest MapWindow 6 source to work with the latest DotSpatial source.

MapWindow 6 Desktop GIS is an open source desktop GIS for Microsoft Windows that is built upon the DotSpatial Library.

This project is a work in progress. It is actively under development at Idaho State University together with our collaborators. We've constructed a GIS based entirely on Dotspatial and able to be installed, updated, and maintained through the Microsoft ClickOnce system. This should allow users to download and install MapWindow 6 on any Windows computer - even without administrator privileges (e.g. in a computer lab setting).

If you are a developer, you can create extensions for MapWindow 6 in C# or VB.NET by using the DotSpatial Library.

The Open Source MapWindow GIS project team also manages a widely used desktop GIS application, MapWindow 4.x which is hosted at www.MapWindow.org. Source code for MapWindow 4 is on the MapWindow 4 CodePlex site. The MapWindow project includes an end user desktop application that is extensible through the writing of plugins written in .NET, as well as an ActiveX control project called MapWinGIS.ocx. This project has been highly successful and continues to grow through adoption and contributions by individuals, companies, agencies, etc.

If you need a stable free GIS for Windows, please use MapWindow 4. If you want to try a work in progress and/or help develop the .NET only version of MapWindow, then please download MapWindow 6.
